What is tape-out? The big day in a chip's life

Tape-out is the moment a finished chip design is sent off to be made. After this, every mistake costs months and money.

In short
  • Tape-out means the chip design is complete, fully checked, and handed over to make the photomasks.
  • Masks are like stencils. The factory uses them to print the chip on a silicon wafer, layer by layer.
  • If a mistake is found after tape-out, the design must be fixed and sent again. This is called a respin.

Why is it called "tape-out"?

Long ago, final chip design files were saved on paper tape and later on reels of magnetic tape. Another story says early mask drawings were made by hand with strips of black tape. Files now go online, but the name stayed.

What happens, step by step

Why it matters

Why this is useful to know

  • Every job in chip design works toward one goal: a tape-out that works the first time.
  • Small teams can share one mask set with others on a "multi-project wafer", which cuts the cost.

Why it is good for freshers

  • Verification engineers find bugs before tape-out, which is why DV jobs are always in demand.
  • Physical design engineers run the final checks. Learn what those checks are; interviewers ask about them.
  • Saying "I worked on a design that reached tape-out" is a big plus on a resume.

Why it is good for India

  • Many chips designed in Bengaluru and Hyderabad design centres are taped out every year.
  • With more support for chip design under ISM 2.0, more Indian-owned chips can reach tape-out.
